Thursday, August 8 ~ 6:00 PM

This class is held on 4 consecutive Thursdays: August 8, 15, 22 & 29. Exploring Centering Prayer and the Enneagram, with Nancy Foster

Discover the 9 personality archetypes mapped by the Enneagram, an ancient system of sacred psychology. Gain insight into how each of us tends to over-identify with our personalities and fall asleep to our Essence. Learn how contemplative practices like Centering Prayer can help us to “wake up” spiritually – supporting us in living from our innate wholeness, our True Nature. Centering Prayer is more of a “heartfulness” than a mindfulness meditation.

(Centering Prayer was developed by Thomas Keating, a Trappist monk, in the 1970’s.  It is a distinctive method of meditation based on releasing of thoughts and self-emptying rather than concentration or awareness practices in mindfulness meditation.  To quote Thomas Keating:  “Indeed, to distinguish Centering Prayer from practices of concentrative attention, we might call it “heartfulness” practice.)

Cultural Mindfulness: Recognizing How Culture Shapes Our Patterns of Thought, A Marin IONS Event with Jeremy Lent

Our mainstream culture is built on unexamined structures of thought inherited from previous generations. In this presentation, Lent will identify historical foundations of our modern worldview. In modern times, the clash between science and religion may seem like the inevitable result of two fundamentally contrasting worldviews. However, it turns out that, far from being diametrically opposed, the Christian worldview served for centuries as an incubator for scientific cognition, which might never have flourished without it. He will show how, by becoming mindful of our patterns of thought, we have the potential to redirect them for more beneficial outcomes.  The program will be followed by interactive practice and discussion.

Is There Life After Death?

Featuring Shirley Shelangoski

When Shirley was 19 years old, in 1974, she was an atheist. That changed when she went swimming off a beach in Cancun and drowned. "I saw the different stages of my life from the time I was a baby.  It was like a film of someone else's life. I realized that everything was actually happening at the same time, and I understood that there is really no time in the universe. "I felt a Presence, but there was no judgment.  I was surprised to discover that consciousness continues and that the purpose of life on earth is to learn. I discovered that the universe is about love and acceptance of others and oneself, not judgment about belief or personality or even actions. We are here to learn compassion and the understanding that all people have equal value, whatever their background or situation in life.

"I was propelled very fast toward a bright Light that I thought was the sun. There was no anxiety or fear - only pervasive peace and joy, a feeling that I was going Home. I had knowledge and understanding of everything. I saw that there is order in the universe, and that nothing is by chance, and it is all okay. The Light got brighter and brighter, and surrounded me. I became merged with the Universe and realized that I was part of the Whole. It was very blissful.  There was no time, and I was there for an infinity." Then Shirley was rescued and regained consciousness. After she recovered, she continued to have out-of-body and other spiritual experiences. Shirley now knows that everyone is connected.  All humans are equal and have to look after one another. After retiring from her career as a parole officer, Shirley became a social activist working for income equality and political rights.

Stand Up for Humanity 2019
Let's gather, millions strong at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, to "Stand Up For Humanity". Featuring dynamic speakers and fantastic music! We are calling all people willing to raise the consciousness within our nation and the world!
Hosted by Unity of Washington, DC - Rev. Sylvia E. Sumter, Senior Minister
1225 R Street NW - Washington, DC 20009 - 202-543-1414
Stand Up For Humanity! is a movement promoting and supporting a world that works for all. It is about embracing those qualities that serve the Highest and Best of our Humanity. We are here to help each other connect and act from our universal and common good; and to raise the consciousness and vibrations on the planet, and within our nation, to one of inclusion, peace, and harmony. And to demonstrate that even one small act taken by an individual can make a difference and contribute to the positive uplifting of humanity.
